Barnie |
Company Pet
Barnie, a pure bred Australian Shepherd, was reportedly born
in a barn. She was subsequently bought by a prospective breeder due to her
exceptional coloration and shape. For the
next two years, she was given extensive attention and training. Presumably in play, Barnie chipped a lower canine
tooth, lost her show ability, and was dumped abruptly by the owner into a
pound. In the pound, she went through heat,
spaying, became depressed, lost much of her pelt, and stopped eating. ARPH, the Australian Shepherd Rescue organization, found
her, sent her to a foster home for several weeks, from which we adopted her. Barnie lived in five locations and experienced
wrenching changes of attention and dislocation. We
happily have provided a long-term home with plenty of love.
She has responded beautifully, once again walks proudly, runs for the first time
since the pound, and has regained weight and her beautiful fur.
While Barnie's typing skills are limited,
she continues as an enthusiastic member of our team.
-----------
The Australian Shepherd is a breed originating in California
in the late 1800s (although its ancestors include sheepdogs from New Zealand and
Australia). Virtually unknown outside the
United States, the Australian Shepherd is now increasing in popularity because of its
obedient and willing nature, as well as its natural good looks. Originally bred as a working shepherd suitable for
the varied climate of California, the Australian Shepherd has adapted superbly to both
family life and work as a service dog, especially in search and rescue. The breed has a temperament similar to those of
Golden and Labrador Retrievers. The breed is
affectionate and playful, but maintains a basic working instinct. Australian Shepherds range from 35-70 pounds and
stand 18-23 inches tall. *
